Protecting Your Peace During the Holiday Season

Advanced Clinical Intern Bec Havian

The prevailing message of the holiday season is one of unity, community, and celebration, but for many this time of year can heighten feelings of isolation and sadness. For those who are not looking forward to reconnecting with family, it might be helpful to strategize ways to ground during this time. Here are some suggestions:

Volunteer to Run Errands: Offer to grab the grocery list and head out the door - this is a family-sanctioned way of taking some time for yourself while being a “team player.” And maybe get a treat for yourself while you’re out.

Go to the Movies: The nice thing about movie theaters is that there’s the implicit expectation to remain silent, so whether you choose to go with family or alone, discussions of politics and family drama are off the table.

Go on a Walk: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, tell folks you’re gonna take a walk around the block to get some fresh air. And if there’s a family dog to walk, even better!

Explore Your Hometown: There are undoubtedly some new additions to your old stomping grounds, so maybe reach out to an old friend and ask to try out a new spot together.

While the holiday season can bring a mixed bag of emotions, remember that the work you’re doing to hold boundaries and protect your peace during the rest of the year still deserves attention and maintenance during this time. Your approach might just need to be a little more creative.
